50 Free Market Intelligence Tools Every Procurement Team Should Know

Procurement teams have access to more market intelligence than ever, but much of the best information is scattered across government databases, industry associations, exchanges and specialized market websites.

There are excellent paid market intelligence subscriptions that provide deeper pricing benchmarks, forecasts, analyst research and category specific data. For categories with significant spend or ongoing market exposure, those subscriptions can be well worth the investment.

But a large paid subscription does not make sense for every category.

Fortunately, there are many free procurement market intelligence resources that provide useful insight into pricing, supplier capacity, demand, labor, freight and supply conditions. Used correctly, they can help answer four fundamental questions:

Are prices moving? Is capacity tightening? Is demand strengthening? Are buyers or suppliers gaining leverage?

Below are 50 free resources procurement teams can use when researching markets, preparing an RFP, evaluating supplier price increases or developing a strategic sourcing strategy.

How Procurement Teams Can Use Free Market Intelligence

The challenge is knowing where to look and how to interpret what you find.

No single indicator gives you the complete picture. A Producer Price Index may tell you that prices are increasing, but it does not necessarily tell you whether supplier capacity is tight. A capacity utilization index may show manufacturers getting busier, but it does not tell you what is happening to raw material prices. Freight rates, inventories, lead times and supplier delivery performance can each tell another part of the story.

The most useful approach is to combine broader market indicators with category specific procurement market intelligence.

For aluminum, that might mean reviewing ISM commodity commentary, LME aluminum pricing, LME inventories, Federal Reserve capacity utilization and the relevant Producer Price Index.

For chemicals, you might combine current regional pricing with chemical production trends, energy and feedstock costs and the appropriate Producer Price Index.

For injection molded plastics, you might watch resin pricing, energy costs, plastics manufacturing capacity utilization and the appropriate PPI series.

For freight, you could combine DAT spot rates and load to truck ratios with diesel prices and Cass freight data.

For contingent labor, look at wages, job openings, staffing activity and the staffing services Producer Price Index.

For software, transaction based SaaS pricing information from sources such as Vendr may be much more meaningful than a broad inflation measure.

The objective is not to watch 50 websites every week. It is to identify the handful of market indicators that matter for the category you are buying and monitor them together.

Turning Market Intelligence Into Strategic Sourcing Decisions

Market intelligence becomes valuable when it changes what you do.

When markets are softening and capacity is available, it may be an excellent time to create competition and run an RFP.

When markets are tightening, strategic sourcing earlier, negotiating a longer agreement or locking in favorable terms may provide protection.

In volatile categories, shorter pricing periods, indexed pricing, surcharges, quarterly bids or reverse auctions may make more sense than fixing pricing for several years. At K2 Sourcing, we have clients running quarterly competitive events in categories including chemicals, metals and freight.

Before your next negotiation or RFP, come back to four questions:

Are prices moving? Is capacity tightening? Is demand strengthening? Are buyers or suppliers gaining leverage?

K2 Sourcing hopes this list of free procurement market intelligence resources gives your team a useful starting point for answering those questions and making better informed strategic sourcing decisions.
